Photography project; Ingredients #2 – artichoke

Artichoke

I gotta say that I really am not a big fan of artichoke. I will eat it if someone puts it in front of me, but it is such a hassle to clean the thing and then once you’re done cleaning most of the pretty thing is gone. Because like them or not, artichoke is a gorgeous vegetable! Look at that beauty above! How’s that for beauty?

This picture was taken outside in the shade on a very sunny summer day last May. We were doing a photoshoot with models in a garden allotment and someone brought these artichokes. We made the mistake of shooting the vegetables at the end of the day which meant most of them had started to wilt a little bit in the heat of the day. Artichokes are a little easier in that so they stayed ok-ish.

The image is shot with my Canon Eos 5D Mark II and 100mm macro 2.8. I used an overhead standpoint (which involved a very scary and wobbly wooden stairs) and shot at 1/160s at f5.0. Iso used was 125.

Comments

  1. Oh Simone! I love artichokes! Growing up here in Santa Cruz we are just miles away from Castroville the “artichoke capitol of the world!” and have enjoyed them every which way since I was as little’n. You are right on that they are perfect subject matter for a photoshoot and hold their own over time. This shot is just lovely!

  2. Yeah Yeah. That would be my settings too.
