Yes, we did it. We booked a holiday to Cuba. I spend the last couple of days researching hotels in Hong Kong and New York and then yesterday we decided to go to Cuba instead. It’s been almost two years that we did any extensive travel since we couldn’t leave Gizmo alone. She needed her medicine plus she got really miserable when we left. After our last trip to Costa Rica two years ago, we decided to stay home for whatever time that was left to her.
For people that love to travel that was a hard decision, but we did it gladly and I’m now even more happy that we gave her those last two years of peace and quiet.
To lift my spirits a bit after her passing on Monday I started researching travel destinations. And I initially went with Hong Kong and New York. Both beautiful cities I have visited before but Tom hasn’t. I wanted to be away on my birthday too but I was a little bit shocked how expensive travel has become in those two years! It’s quite a difference with before or maybe I forgot how much money is involved.
Hong Kong and New York are – ofcourse – both cities that have high prices for hotels and while I got some very generous offers from internet friends we did decide in the end to go for Cuba. We will definitely go to both cities at a later time too as I’d love to go there again but for now Cuba is booked! Whoohoo! Can’t wait and quite excited for our upcoming trip.
Have you been to Cuba? If so, let me know your tips!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for you!!! Hope you’ll be instagraming a ton
If they have internet (which i am not so sure about…) I will definitely be sharing stuff! Still gotta wait three months though…
Oh Simone, you are making it so right. Indeed everything has its time, and now it is time for travelling again
Cool! Personally I never have been to Cuba so far, but some friends were recently there and liked it very much. The photos they did where just great because of all the beautiful colors.
Wish you a great weekend, Eva
Thanks so much Eva!
Living in SoFL, I’m close to the plight of the early refugees and the families they left behind. The culture, food and music has been, if not central, omnipresent to my being. I visited Cuba almost 10 years ago under the only way legally possible at the time from the U.S. as an “educational” trip. I was in travel at the time and led a group of about 20 women. We visited 3 cities and had many memorable and heartfelt encounters with the locals.
This was before blogging and while I took many photos, I never incorporated them on my blog. I did, however, post a retrospect of my trip. http://foodalogue.com/2003/11/cuba-emotional-and-education-journey.html
Thanks so much Joan. Impressive post you made and yes I think we will have mixed feelings in a lot of cases but it will be interesting to see what has changed in those almost ten years since your post!
